Kalkantepe is a neighbourhood (formerly a village) located within the central district (Merkez) of Elâzığ Province in eastern Turkey. It is situated on the eastern slopes of the Eastern Anatolian highlands, approximately 10 kilometers southeast of the provincial capital, Elâzığ city. The settlement lies at an elevation of roughly 1,050 meters above sea level and is accessible via local road networks that connect it to the surrounding rural communities and the main highway linking Elâzığ with neighboring provinces.
Administrative status
Following the 2012 Turkish administrative reorganisation (Law No. 6360), many villages in the central districts of provinces were reclassified as neighbourhoods (mahalle) within the larger municipal structure. Kalkantepe was consequently incorporated into the municipality of Elâzığ, retaining its local identity while being governed under the broader urban administration.
Demographics
According to the Address-Based Population Registration System (ADNKS) data released by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) for 2022, Kalkantepe has a permanent resident population of approximately 520 individuals. The demographic profile is typical of rural settlements in the region, with a relatively balanced gender distribution and a median age reflecting a modestly aging population due to out‑migration of younger residents to urban centres for education and employment.
Economy and livelihood
The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and animal husbandry. Residents cultivate cereals such as wheat and barley, as well as legumes and fruit trees adapted to the continental climate of the area. Livestock rearing, particularly sheep and cattle, provides additional income and contributes to the region’s dairy production. Small‑scale trade and seasonal labor in the nearby city of Elâzığ complement these activities.
Infrastructure
Kalkantepe is equipped with basic infrastructure, including a primary school, a health centre, and a village mosque serving the religious needs of the community. Electricity, potable water, and telecommunications services are provided through provincial networks. The neighbourhood is connected to the national road system via provincial roads, facilitating transport of goods and movement of residents to the provincial capital.
Cultural and historical context
The name “Kalkantepe” combines the Turkish words kalkan (“shield”) and tepe (“hill” or “peak”), a toponymic pattern common in Anatolia that often reflects a geographical feature or historic function of the site. While no major archaeological excavations have been reported specifically at Kalkantepe, the broader Elâzığ region is known for its rich pre‑historic and historic heritage, encompassing Hittite, Urartian, Roman, and Ottoman periods. Consequently, the area may contain unexcavated archaeological deposits characteristic of the Eastern Anatolian plateau.
