Kachhua Sanctuary

Kachhua Sanctuary is a wildlife protected area in India, specifically designated for the conservation of freshwater turtles and other aquatic fauna.

Overview Located in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India, the Kachhua Wildlife Sanctuary encompasses a 7-kilometer stretch of the Ganges River between Rajghat and Ramnagar. Established in 1989, its primary objective is to safeguard various species of freshwater turtles indigenous to the Ganges, many of which are endangered, as well as other aquatic life forms including fish and Ganges River Dolphins. The sanctuary plays a critical role in maintaining the ecological health and biodiversity of this segment of the sacred river, providing a protected environment within a highly populated and anthropogenically influenced region.

Etymology/Origin The name "Kachhua" (कछुआ) is a Hindi word meaning "turtle" or "tortoise," directly reflecting the sanctuary's primary conservation focus. The establishment of the sanctuary in 1989 was a direct response to the alarming decline in freshwater turtle populations within the Ganges River, largely attributable to habitat degradation, pollution, and illegal poaching.

Characteristics The sanctuary is characterized by a riverine ecosystem, comprising the flowing waters of the Ganges, submerged areas, sandbanks, and associated riparian vegetation. It provides a critical habitat for a diversity of freshwater turtle species, including the critically endangered Red-crowned Roofed Turtle (Batagur kachuga), the Indian softshell turtle (Nilssonia gangetica), and the Indian flap-shelled turtle (Lissemys punctata), among others. The protected status aids in the monitoring and management of turtle populations, offering a relatively undisturbed environment for breeding, nesting, and survival amidst the extensive human activities along the river. Its unique location within a major urban and pilgrimage center presents both challenges and opportunities for conservation and public awareness.
