Kaľava is a village and municipality in the Spišská Nová Ves District in the Košice Region of eastern Slovakia.
Geography
Kaľava is situated in the northern part of the Košice Region, approximately 20 kilometers (12 miles) north of the district capital Spišská Nová Ves. It lies in the historical region of Spiš, within the valley of the Hornád River. The surrounding landscape is characterized by the foothills of the Levoča Mountains and the Spiš-Gemer Karst, offering a mix of agricultural land and forested areas.
History
The first written mention of Kaľava dates back to 1300. Historically, the area was part of the Kingdom of Hungary. Like many villages in the region, its development was influenced by local nobility and agricultural activities. After the dissolution of Austria-Hungary in 1918, Kaľava became part of Czechoslovakia, and since 1993, it has been part of independent Slovakia.
Demographics
The population of Kaľava is relatively small, typically ranging between 400 and 500 inhabitants. The majority of the population is Slovak.

The local economy is primarily based on agriculture and forestry. Due to its rural setting, there are limited industrial or commercial activities within the municipality itself. Infrastructure includes basic services for residents, such as a local road network connecting it to neighboring villages and the district center.
Culture and Sights
While a small village, Kaľava possesses a rural character typical of the Spiš region. Notable structures often include a local church, which serves as a community focal point. The natural surroundings offer opportunities for hiking and exploring the local landscape.
