The station first signed on the air in 1964 as KOWO-FM, operating as the FM counterpart to AM sister station KOWO (now KRFO AM). The call sign was changed to KRFO-FM in 1974, aligning with its AM sibling. Throughout much of its history, KRFO-FM has maintained a country music format, becoming a staple for the genre in its listening area. In 2000, the station, along with its sister stations, was acquired by Cumulus Media, which later transferred its smaller market stations, including those in Owatonna, to Townsquare Media.
