Definition
Kōchi Station (高知駅, Kōchi‑eki) is a passenger railway station located in the city centre of Kōchi, the capital of Kōchi Prefecture on the island of Shikoku, Japan. It is operated by the Shikoku Railway Company (JR Shikoku) and serves the Dosan Line.
Overview
Opened on 15 November 1924, Kōchi Station is a principal hub in the Shikoku rail network. The station lies 126.6 km from the Dosan Line’s starting point at Tadotsu and 179.3 km from Okayama on Honshū, providing both local and limited‑express services that connect Kōchi with destinations such as Tadotsu, Takamatsu, and Okayama. In front of the station is Kōchi‑Ekimae Station, a tram stop on the Tosaden Kōtsū Sanbashi Line, and a bus terminal that links the city with surrounding municipalities.
Etymology / Origin
The name “Kōchi” (高知) combines the kanji 高 (kō, “high”) and 知 (chi, “knowledge” or “wisdom”). The station inherits its name directly from the city of Kōchi, which was named for its historical role as a regional administrative centre. The station’s designation “Kōchi‑eki” follows the standard Japanese naming convention of appending the suffix ‑駅 (‑eki, “station”) to the place name.
