Károly Palotai

Early Life and Playing Career

Born in Békéscsaba, Hungary, Palotai began his football career as a defender. He played for Győri ETO FC (now ETO FC Győr) for the majority of his playing career. As a player, he achieved significant success:

  • 1964 Summer Olympics: Palotai was a member of the Hungarian national team that won the gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.
  • Hungarian League: He also won the Hungarian League title with Győri ETO FC in the 1963 autumn season.

Refereeing Career

After retiring as a player, Palotai transitioned to a career in refereeing, where he achieved even greater international renown. He quickly established himself as one of the world's leading football officials during the 1970s and early 1980s, known for his calm demeanor and accurate decision-making.

His notable refereeing appointments include:

  • FIFA World Cups: He refereed matches in three consecutive FIFA World Cups:
    • 1974 FIFA World Cup in West Germany
    • 1978 FIFA World Cup in Argentina
    • 1982 FIFA World Cup in Spain
  • European Cup Finals: Palotai officiated two European Cup finals, the pinnacle of European club football:
    • 1976 European Cup Final between Bayern Munich and AS Saint-Étienne
    • 1981 European Cup Final between Liverpool and Real Madrid
  • UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final: He was also the referee for the 1979 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup Final between Barcelona and Fortuna Düsseldorf.
  • UEFA European Championship: He refereed a semi-final match at the 1980 UEFA European Championship.

Later Life and Death

After retiring from active refereeing, Palotai remained involved in football, often serving in administrative or advisory roles. He passed away on 3 February 2018, at the age of 82, in Győr, Hungary.
