Junee Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia. The shire covers an area of approximately 2,274 km² (877 sq mi) and is administered from the town of Junee, which is situated about 260 km south‑west of Sydney and 67 km north‑west of Wagga Wagga.
Geography
The LGA lies within the Murrumbidgee River catchment and consists primarily of agricultural land, with mixed farming, cropping, and livestock production. The terrain is generally flat to gently undulating, characteristic of the Riverina plains.
History
Junee Shire was formed on 1 January 1981 through the amalgamation of the Municipality of Junee and the surrounding Junee Shire. The region’s European settlement dates to the mid‑19th century, largely driven by railway development and the expansion of pastoral activities.
Governance
The council is comprised of nine councillors elected proportionally as a single ward for four‑year terms. The mayor is elected by the councillors at the first meeting of each council term. The council is responsible for local services including road maintenance, waste management, community facilities, and local planning.

According to the 2021 Australian Census, Junee Shire had a resident population of approximately 7,800 people. The median age was 41 years, and the proportion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples was about 5 % of the population.

Agriculture is the dominant economic sector, with significant outputs of wheat, canola, sorghum, and livestock (cattle and sheep). The town of Junee hosts a regional railway yard and provides retail, health, and education services to surrounding rural communities.
