Julio Becerra Rivero (born 7 February 1973) is a Cuban‑born chess Grandmaster who has represented the United States in international competition since emigrating in the early 2000s. He is noted for his contributions to chess education and promotion in Florida, where he resides.
Early life and education
Becerra Rivero was born in Havana, Cuba. He learned chess at an early age, quickly rising through the Cuban junior ranks. He earned the title of International Master in 1996 and the Grandmaster title in 2001, becoming one of the few Cuban players to achieve the highest FIDE title during that period.
Career
Competitive achievements
- 1998: Won the Cuban Chess Championship.
- 2001: Achieved the Grandmaster title after securing norms at tournaments in Havana, Madrid, and Reykjavik.
- 2002–present: Competed in numerous U.S. Open events, regularly finishing in the top ten.
- 2008: Represented the United States at the World Team Chess Championship as a reserve player.
Coaching and promotion
Since settling in Miami, Florida, Becerra Rivero has been active as a chess coach, author, and commentator. He founded the "Becerra Chess Academy," offering training programs for youth and adult players. He has produced instructional video series and contributed analysis to major chess publications, including Chess Life and ChessBase.
Personal life
Becerra Rivero is married and has two children. He holds dual Cuban‑American citizenship and is fluent in Spanish and English. Outside of chess, he has expressed interest in classical music and literature.
