Julian Okwara

Julian C. Okwara (born December 27 1997) is a Nigerian‑English professional American football defensive end who plays for the Cleveland Browns of the National Football League (NFL). He played college football at the University of Notre Dame and was selected in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft by the Detroit Lions.

Early life and education
Okwara was born in London, England, while his mother was visiting family, and spent his early childhood in Lagos, Nigeria, growing up in the Lekki area. He moved to the United States in the third grade and attended Ardrey Kell High School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Rated as a four‑star defensive end recruit, he committed to Notre Dame for his collegiate career.

College career
At Notre Dame (2016–2019), Okwara appeared in 11 games as a true freshman, recording four tackles. As a sophomore, he played in 12 of 13 games, posting 17 tackles, 2.5 sacks, and an interception. In his junior season he started 12 of 13 games, amassing 38 tackles and eight sacks. He returned for his senior year in 2019, further solidifying his reputation as a versatile edge rusher.

Professional career

Detroit Lions (2020–2023)
The Lions drafted Okwara 67th overall in the third round of the 2020 NFL Draft. He signed a four‑year contract on June 9, 2020. His rookie season was limited by a right‑leg injury that placed him on injured reserve in October 2020; he was activated later that year. He recorded 72 total tackles, 10 sacks, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, four pass deflections, and one interception through the 2025 season.

Philadelphia Eagles (2024)
Okwara signed with the Eagles on February 14, 2024, but was released during the preseason on August 26, 2024.

Arizona Cardinals (2024)
He joined the Cardinals’ practice squad on August 28, 2024, and was promoted to the active roster on September 11, 2024.

Cleveland Browns (2025–present)
On April 14, 2025, Okwara signed with the Cleveland Browns. He currently wears jersey number 99 and serves as a defensive end on the Browns’ front seven.

Personal life
Okwara is the younger brother of former NFL defensive end Romeo Okwara. He holds both Nigerian and English citizenship and has spoken about his multicultural upbringing influencing his perspective on and off the field.
