Definition
Judith Sargentini (born 15 February 1962) is a Dutch politician who served as a Member of the European Parliament (MEP) from 2009 to 2019, representing the Dutch GreenLeft (GroenLinks) party. She is known for her work on civil liberties, human rights, and European foreign policy, particularly concerning Russia and the European Union’s external relations.
Overview
Sargentini was born in Haarlem, the Netherlands, and studied history at the University of Amsterdam. Before entering the European Parliament, she held several positions in Dutch politics and civil society, including as a member of the municipal council of Amsterdam (1998–2006) and as a policy adviser for the GreenLeft parliamentary group in the Dutch House of Representatives.
During her tenure as an MEP, Sargentini served on the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs (LIBE) and the Subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI). She chaired the European Parliament’s Committee of Inquiry into the alleged use of the European Union’s Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP) funds to support the political repression of the Ukrainian opposition by the Russian government, commonly known as the “EU‑Russia investigation.”
Sargentini was also the GreenLeft’s lead candidate (lijsttrekker) for the 2019 European Parliament election, though the party did not secure any seats in that election. After leaving the European Parliament, she continued involvement in human‑rights advocacy and policy analysis.
Etymology/Origin
The given name “Judith” derives from the Hebrew יְהוּדִית (Yehudit), meaning “woman of Judea” or “Jewish woman.” The surname “Sargentini” is of Italian origin, a patronymic form of “Sargent,” historically referring to a steward or a military officer’s attendant. The combination of a Dutch first name and an Italian surname reflects a multicultural family background, though specific genealogical details are not publicly documented.
