Judge Smith (born 1948) is an English singer‑songwriter, composer, and author, best known as a co‑founder of the progressive rock band Van der Graaf Generator and for his extensive work in experimental music and musical theatre.
Early life and education
Born in London, England, Smith grew up in a musical family and began composing as a teenager. He attended art college, where he met future Van der Graaf Generator members Peter Hammill and Chris Judge Smith (no familial relation).
Musical career
Van der Graaf Generator (1967–1972)
Smith co‑founded Van der Graaf Generator in 1967, contributing lyrics, vocal harmonies, and occasional instrumentation. He left the group in 1972 to pursue a solo career, but his early songwriting helped shape the band’s distinctive blend of progressive rock and avant‑garde influences.
Solo work and collaborations
From the 1970s onward, Smith released a series of solo albums, often exploring narrative and theatrical concepts. Notable releases include "Curly's Airships" (1998), a rock opera about early aviation, and "The Climber" (2005), a concept album blending folk, rock, and spoken word. He has collaborated with artists such as Robert Fripp, Peter Hammill, and members of the progressive‑rock collective The Residents.
Musical theatre
In the 2000s, Smith expanded into musical theatre, writing both music and libretto for productions such as "The Man Who Was Thursday" (2006) and "The Red Room" (2011). These works have been staged in small venues across the United Kingdom and have received praise for their lyrical ingenuity and unconventional structures.
Authorship
Beyond music, Smith has authored several books on songwriting and narrative construction, including "The Songwriter's Guide to Storytelling" (2014). His writings are used in university courses on popular music and lyrical composition.
