Joseph Gordon-Levitt (born February 17 1981) is an American actor, filmmaker, and entrepreneur. He began his career as a child actor, appearing in television series such as A Little Game (1991) and 3rd Rock from the Sun (1996–2001). Gordon‑Levitt gained mainstream recognition for his role as Tommy Solomon in the film 10 Things I Hate About You (1999). He subsequently starred in a range of commercially and critically successful films, including Mysterious Skin (2004), The Sopranos (2004), Brick (2005), Inception (2010), 500 Days of Summer (2009), The Dark Knight Rises (2012), Don Jon (2013) – which he also wrote, directed, and edited – and Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs (2012).
In addition to acting, Gordon‑Levitt co‑founded the online creative community and production platform hitRECord in 2008, which facilitates collaborative projects in film, music, and visual arts. He has directed several short films and music videos, and has served as an executive producer on multiple hitRECord projects.
Gordon‑Levitt was born in Los Angeles, California, to film producer Nancy (née Lenz) and former model and advertising executive Conrad Gordon‑Levitt. He attended the Columbia University School of General Studies, completing a degree in philosophy in 2019. He married actress Tasha McCauley in 2014; the couple has one child, born in 2022.
His performances have earned him nominations for several awards, including a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy for 500 Days of Summer and a Saturn Award for Best Actor for The Dark Knight Rises.
