Definition
José Mindlin (June 8, 1914 – February 20, 2020) was a Brazilian businessman, lawyer, bibliophile, and philanthropist, renowned for assembling one of the most significant private collections of books and manuscripts in Brazil, which he later donated to the University of São Paulo.
Overview
Born in São Paulo, Brazil, Mindlin earned a law degree from the University of São Paulo (USP) in 1937 and initially pursued a career in law and banking. In the 1950s he co‑founded the publishing house Editora Abril, which became one of Brazil’s largest magazine publishers. Throughout his life, Mindlin devoted considerable resources to collecting rare books, manuscripts, maps, and other cultural artifacts, focusing on Portuguese‑language works and Brazilian historical documents. In 2005, he sold his extensive collection to USP for a reported US$ 6 million, establishing the Biblioteca José Mindlin, which opened to the public in 2013 and serves as a major research library. Mindlin continued to support cultural and educational initiatives until his death at the age of 105.
