Definition
José Argüelles (January 6 1939 – December 12 2011) was an American author, artist, and New Age visionary best known for popularizing the 2012 phenomenon and for organizing the 1987 Harmonic Convergence, an international meditation event.
Overview
Born in New York City to a family of Spanish‑Cuban descent, Argüelles studied at the University of Michigan, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in 1961 and a Master of Fine Arts in 1962. He worked as a graphic designer and art director before turning to writing and lecturing on themes of consciousness, time, and planetary cycles.
Argüelles co‑founded the Planetary Activation organization and, with his wife Lloydine Argüelles, launched the Institute for the Future of Culture. He authored several books, the most influential being The Mayan Factor (1987) and The End of Time (1995), which interpret the ancient Maya Long Count calendar as predicting a transformative shift in human consciousness on 21 December 2012.
The 1987 Harmonic Convergence, promoted by Argüelles, attracted millions of participants worldwide and is regarded as a seminal event in the modern New Age movement. His later work continued to explore the "Law of Time," a concept proposing that the prevailing 12‑hour clock structure limits human perception and that a shift to a 13‑month, 28‑day calendar would align society with natural rhythms.
