Joona Toivio was born on 5 September 1991 in Helsinki, Finland. He began his senior club career with FC Honka, making his professional debut in the Veikkausliiga in 2009. He subsequently signed for HJK Helsinki, where he played from 2011 to 2013 and won domestic league titles. In 2013, Toivio transferred to Austrian club Wolfsberger AC, competing in the Austrian Bundesliga until 2015. During his time with Wolfsberger, he returned to HJK Helsinki on loan for part of the 2015 season. He then joined Polish Ekstraklasa side Pogoń Szczecin in 2017, remaining there until 2021. In 2022, Toivio re‑signed with HJK Helsinki, where he continues his club career.
