Jonas Siegenthaler (born 6 May 1997) is a Swiss professional ice hockey defenceman who currently plays for the New Jersey Devils of the National Hockey League (NHL). He was selected 57th overall by the Washington Capitals in the second round of the 2015 NHL Entry Draft.
Early Life and Background
Siegenthaler was born in Zurich, Switzerland. His father is Swiss and his mother is from Thailand, making him the first known NHL player of Thai descent. He began playing hockey at age four after inheriting equipment from his half-brother.
Playing Career
Siegenthaler made his professional debut in the National League A (NLA) with the ZSC Lions during the 2013–14 season. He was rated as a top prospect and was selected 57th overall by the Washington Capitals in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft. On 30 July 2015, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Capitals while remaining on loan with the ZSC Lions for further development.
He made his NHL debut with the Capitals on 8 November 2018 against the Columbus Blue Jackets. He recorded his first NHL point on 14 December 2018, earning the primary assist on a goal by Alexander Ovechkin.
On 11 April 2021, Siegenthaler was traded by the Capitals to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in the 2021 NHL Entry Draft. He subsequently signed a two-year, $2.25 million contract extension on 9 July 2021, and later agreed to a five-year, $17 million contract extension on 26 July 2022.
International Play
Siegenthaler has represented Switzerland at multiple international tournaments, including the IIHF World U18 Championships (2013, 2014, 2015), the World Junior Championships (2015, 2016, 2017), and the IIHF World Championship (2021, 2022, 2024, 2025). He was named to the 2015 U18 WJC All-Star Team. He won a silver medal with Switzerland at the 2024 IIHF World Championship. He also competed for Switzerland at the 2026 Winter Olympics.

Siegenthaler is fluent in multiple languages and communicates in Thai, reflecting his maternal heritage. He has described his upbringing as influenced by Swiss, Thai, and Buddhist cultures.
