Jon Huntsman Jr. (born March 26, 1960) is an American politician, diplomat, and businessman. He served as the 16th governor of Utah from 2005 to 2009, as the United States ambassador to Singapore from 1992 to 1993, and as the United States ambassador to China from 2009 to 2011. Huntsman was a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 2012 United States presidential election.
Early life and education
Jon Meade Huntsman Jr. was born in Redwood City, California, to Jon J. Huntsman Sr., the founder of the Huntsman Corporation, a global chemicals and plastics company, and Karen Haight. He grew up in a family with significant business interests and was raised in both California and Utah. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in international politics from the University of Pennsylvania in 1983 and later obtained a Master of Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University in 1990.
Business career
Before entering public service, Huntsman worked for his family's corporation, serving in various roles including director of marketing and senior vice president. He also held positions with the consulting firm Bain & Company and the investment firm Qatalyst Group.
Diplomatic service
- Ambassador to Singapore (1992–1993): Appointed by President George H. W. Bush, Huntsman served as the United States ambassador to Singapore, focusing on trade and economic relations.
- Ambassador to China (2009–2011): Appointed by President Barack Obama, he served as the U.S. ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, where he emphasized diplomatic engagement, business ties, and climate cooperation.
Political career
- Governor of Utah (2005–2009): Elected as a Republican, Huntsman emphasized bipartisan cooperation, education reform, and fiscal responsibility. During his tenure, he signed legislation on renewable energy, economic development, and healthcare reforms.
- 2012 Presidential Campaign: Huntsman announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination in June 2011. His campaign emphasized a centrist, pragmatic approach to domestic and foreign policy. He withdrew from the race in January 2012 and endorsed the eventual nominee, Mitt Romney.
Later activities
After leaving diplomatic service, Huntsman returned to the private sector and continued involvement in public policy. He co‑founded the Huntsman Institute for International Relations and served on the board of several corporations and non‑profit organizations. He also contributed to discussions on climate change, trade, and U.S.–China relations.
Personal life
Jon Huntsman Jr. is married to Mary Kaye Huntsman, a former Miss USA and public health advocate. The couple has five children. Huntsman is a practicing member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and has publicly discussed the influence of his faith on his public service.
