Johnny Moore (born March 3, 1958) is an American former professional basketball player who played in the National Basketball Association (NBA) from 1979 to 1988. He was a point guard renowned for his exceptional passing skills and court vision.
Moore played college basketball at the University of Texas, where he set numerous school records. He was drafted by the Seattle SuperSonics in the second round of the 1979 NBA draft, but was traded to the San Antonio Spurs before the season began.
Moore spent the majority of his NBA career with the Spurs, playing alongside stars like George Gervin and Artis Gilmore. He quickly established himself as a key player, known for his assists, steals, and defensive contributions. He was selected to the NBA All-Star Game in 1982 and named to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1982.
Tragically, Moore's career was cut short due to a rare neurological disorder called "recurring attacks of atypical absence." This condition caused brief periods of disorientation and memory loss, forcing him to retire prematurely.
After his playing career, Moore remained involved in basketball through coaching and community work. He is remembered as one of the most gifted passers and playmakers in NBA history, whose career was sadly hampered by health issues. He was inducted into the San Antonio Sports Hall of Fame in 2008.
