Johnny Evans (Canadian football)

Definition
John Hamilton Evans (22 March 1897 – 27 June 1932) was a Canadian football quarterback who achieved university‑level All‑Star status and won two Grey Cup championships while playing for Queen’s University. He also played professionally for the Hamilton Tigers and later worked as a physician.

Overview
Born in Kingston, Ontario, Evans enrolled at Queen’s University, where he played for the Golden Gaels from 1919 to 1923. During his tenure the team secured back‑to‑back Grey Cup victories in 1922 (the 10th Grey Cup) and 1923 (the 11th Grey Cup), the latter a 54‑0 rout of the Regina Roughriders in which Evans scored two touchdowns. His performance earned him selection as a Toronto Globe All‑Star three consecutive years (1921–1923) and three Eastern CFL All‑Star honors (1921, 1922, 1923). After graduating, he spent the 1924 season with the Hamilton Tigers of the Canadian Rugby Union, the predecessor to the modern Canadian Football League (CFL).

Following his football career, Evans pursued medicine, eventually serving as a physician for the Algoma Steel Company in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. He died tragically on 27 June 1932 when his vehicle entered a canal and he drowned. In his memory, Queen’s University instituted the Johnny Evans Memorial Award for Most Valuable Player, and he was posthumously inducted into the Queen’s University Football Hall of Fame.

Etymology/Origin
The given name “Johnny” is a diminutive of “John,” derived from the Hebrew Yochanan meaning “Yahweh is gracious.” The surname “Evans” is of Welsh origin, a patronymic meaning “son of Evan,” with “Evan” being the Welsh form of “John.” Thus, “Johnny Evans” essentially combines two forms of the same root name.
