Johnny Briceño (born 21 July 1960) is a Belizean politician who has served as the Prime Minister of Belize since 1 November 2020, following the victory of his People's United Party (PUP) in the 2020 general election. He is also the leader of the PUP, a position he has held since 2016.
Early Life and Education
Briceño was born in Belize City, Belize. He attended St. John's College in Belize City for his secondary education. He later pursued higher education in the United Kingdom, obtaining a degree in economics from the University of the West Indies, Cave Hill Campus.
Political Career
- Early Involvement: Briceño entered politics in the 1980s, initially serving as a youth leader within the PUP.
- Member of the House of Representatives: He was first elected to the Belize House of Representatives for the Belize Rural Central constituency in 1993, a seat he has held through multiple election cycles.
- Ministerial Positions:
- Minister of Natural Resources (1998–2001) under Prime Minister Said Musa.
- Minister of Finance (2001–2003).
- Minister of Education, Culture, Youth, Science and Technology (2003–2005).
- Opposition Leadership: After the PUP's defeat in the 2008 general election, Briceño served as an opposition member and held various shadow cabinet roles.
- PUP Leadership: In November 2016, Briceño succeeded Francis Fonseca as leader of the PUP.
- Prime Ministership: The PUP won 32 of the 31 seats contested in the 2020 general election, and Briceño was sworn in as Prime Minister on 1 November 2020. His administration has focused on economic recovery, anti-corruption measures, and public health response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
