Definition
John Stiegelmeier (born July 30 1960) is an American football coach who served as the head coach of the South Dakota State University (SDSU) Jackrabbits football program from 1997 until his retirement after the 2022 season.
Overview
Stiegelmeier began his affiliation with South Dakota State as a student‑athlete, playing quarterback for the Jackrabbits from 1979 to 1982. After graduating, he entered coaching, initially serving as a graduate assistant at SDSU (1983–1984) and later as an assistant coach focusing on defensive backs and special teams (1985–1990). He moved to the University of North Dakota as a defensive coordinator (1991–1995) before returning to SDSU as defensive coordinator in 1996.
In December 1997, Stiegelmeier was promoted to head coach, a position he held for 25 seasons. Under his leadership, the Jackrabbits transitioned from NCAA Division II to Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) in 2004. He guided the program to eight Missouri Valley Football Conference (MVFC) titles (2007, 2012, 2016‑2021) and eleven FCS playoff appearances. The 2019 season resulted in a national runner‑up finish, and the 2022 season culminated in SDSU’s first FCS national championship, a 45‑21 victory over North Dakota State. Stiegelmeier retired following that championship, ending his head‑coaching tenure with a record of 101 wins and 45 losses.
His coaching accolades include the 2019 Eddie Robinson Award (national FCS Coach of the Year) and multiple MVFC Coach of the Year honors.
