John Silvanus Wilson (born 1957) is an American academic administrator, historian, and educator specializing in African‑American and African diaspora studies. He is most prominently known for his tenure as dean of Harvard College, the undergraduate division of Harvard University, a position he held from July 2015 until July 2020.
Early life and education
Wilson was born in New York City. He earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in history from the University of Pennsylvania, followed by a Master of Arts and a Doctor of Philosophy in African history from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. His doctoral dissertation focused on the experiences of African immigrants in the United States.
Academic career

Yale University (1990s–2002) – Wilson joined Yale as an assistant professor of African American studies, later becoming associate professor. He contributed to the development of the African American Studies program and published research on Black migration and community formation.

University of Rochester (2002–2015) – Wilson served as the dean of the School of Arts, Sciences and Engineering, overseeing academic policy, faculty recruitment, and curriculum development. He was also a professor of history, teaching courses on African diaspora history.

Harvard University (2015–2020) – Appointed dean of Harvard College, Wilson was responsible for undergraduate academic affairs, residential life, and student services. During his deanship, he emphasized curricular reform, increased financial aid, and initiatives to promote diversity, equity, and inclusion across the undergraduate experience.

Post‑Harvard activities – After stepping down as dean, Wilson returned to the faculty as a senior lecturer in the Department of History and continues to oversee programs related to African diaspora scholarship.
