John Leonard Powell (1920–2014) was an American physicist and academic, best known for his contributions to physics education and his long-standing tenure at the University of Oregon.
Powell's most significant contribution to the field was the textbook Quantum Mechanics, co-authored with Bernd Crasemann and first published in 1961. The book became a standard introductory text for senior undergraduate and graduate students, valued for its rigorous approach to wave mechanics and the mathematical formalism of quantum theory. The text remained in print for several decades and was widely utilized in physics curricula across the United States.
Powell earned his PhD from the University of Wisconsin in 1948. Following the completion of his doctoral studies, he joined the faculty of the University of Oregon, where he served as a professor in the Department of Physics. During his career, he also served as the head of the physics department and contributed to the administrative and academic development of the university's science programs. His research interests primarily concerned theoretical physics, specifically the application of quantum mechanics.
He retired from the University of Oregon as Professor Emeritus and died on May 24, 2014.
