John O'Donohue

John O'Donohue (28 January 1956 – 30 March 2008) was an Irish poet, author, philosopher, and former Catholic priest. He is best known for his writings on Celtic spirituality, particularly the books Anam Cara (1997) and The Celtic Dream of Life (1992). His work blends poetry, mysticism, and a deep engagement with the Irish landscape and cultural heritage.

Early life and education

John O'Donohue was born in Dublin, Ireland, and raised in the suburb of Rathmines. He entered the seminary at St Patrick's College, Maynooth, where he studied philosophy and theology, earning a degree in philosophy. He was ordained a priest in 1983.

Career

After his ordination, O'Donohue served as a priest in the Archdiocese of Dublin and later taught at the Pontifical Irish College in Rome. In the early 1990s he left the priesthood to pursue a literary and philosophical career. He worked as a writer, speaker, and consultant, lecturing internationally on topics such as Celtic spirituality, myth, and the creative imagination.

O'Donohue's first major publication, The Celtic Dream of Life: The Healing Power of Myth (1992), introduced his approach to Celtic myth as a source of spiritual insight. His subsequent book, Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom (1997), became a bestseller and has been translated into multiple languages. Other notable works include Eternal Echoes (2000), Divine Beauty (2002), and The Sacred Art of Dying (2008). He also contributed essays and poems to anthologies and journals.
