John L. Whitehead (March 28, 1823 – January 17, 1899) was an American lawyer and politician who served as a [[U.S. Representative]] from [[Iowa]].
Early life and education
Whitehead was born in [[Waterloo, New York]], on March 28, 1823. He moved to [[Indiana]] in 1838, where he pursued legal studies. He was admitted to the bar in 1845 and commenced practice in Indiana.Career
Whitehead practiced law in Indiana until 1856, when he relocated to [[Iowa]]. He served as the district attorney for [[Scott County, Iowa]], from 1860 to 1864.In 1874, Whitehead was elected as a [[Republican Party (United States)|Republican]] to the [[United States House of Representatives]] representing Iowa's [[Iowa's 2nd congressional district|2nd congressional district]]. He served in the [[44th United States Congress]] from March 4, 1875, to March 3, 1877. He was an unsuccessful candidate for reelection in 1876.
After his congressional term, Whitehead resumed the practice of law. He also served as the [[Mayor]] of [[Davenport, Iowa]], from 1888 to 1890.
Death
John L. Whitehead died in Davenport, Iowa, on January 17, 1899, at the age of 75. He was interred in [[Oakdale Cemetery (Davenport, Iowa)|Oakdale Cemetery]] in Davenport.References
