John Joly (2 February 1857 – 1 October 1933) was an Irish physicist and geologist, noted for his pioneering work in radiometric dating and for his contributions to the scientific community in Ireland and the United Kingdom. He was created a baronet in 1902 and elected a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1907.
Early life and education
John Joly was born in Dublin, Ireland, the son of John Joly, a well‑known Dublin merchant. He attended the Royal School, Armagh, before enrolling at Trinity College Dublin, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1878 and a Master of Arts in 1881. He later obtained a Doctor of Science (DSc) from the same institution.
Academic and scientific career
After completing his studies, Joly held a series of academic posts at Trinity College Dublin, becoming a professor of physics in 1889. He also served as the professor of geology from 1900 to 1912. In parallel with his university duties, Joly was an active member of several scientific societies. He served as president of the Royal Irish Academy (1912–1916) and was a founding member of the Irish Geographical Society.
Contributions to radiometric dating
Joly is best known for developing early quantitative methods for estimating the age of the Earth using radioactive decay. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries he applied the principles of radioactivity, discovered by Henri Becquerel and Marie and Pierre Curie, to geological materials. His 1899 paper, “The Age of the Earth,” presented calculations based on the decay of uranium and thorium series, producing one of the first scientific estimates of Earth’s age that exceeded several hundred million years.
Later, Joly refined techniques for measuring the accumulation of lead in minerals, a method that formed the basis for what became the potassium‑argon (K‑Ar) dating technique widely used in geochronology. Although the full K‑Ar method was formally developed after his death, Joly’s work laid essential theoretical and experimental foundations for modern radiometric dating.
