John Hunter (1753 – May 13, 1815) was an American politician who served as a United States Representative from New York. He was a prominent figure in Westchester County, New York, during the late 18th and early 19th centuries.
Born in New York in 1753, Hunter engaged in agricultural pursuits and was a landowner in Salem (now Lewisboro), Westchester County. His political career began at the state level. He served as a member of the New York State Assembly from Westchester County in the 1780s and 1790s. He later represented the Southern District in the New York State Senate from 1798 to 1801.
In 1800, Hunter was elected as a Democratic-Republican to the Seventh Congress, serving from March 4, 1801, to March 3, 1803. He was subsequently re-elected to the Ninth, Tenth, and Eleventh Congresses, serving a second non-consecutive tenure from March 4, 1805, to March 3, 1811. During his time in Congress, he was involved in various legislative matters of the early American republic.
After concluding his final term in Congress, Hunter retired from national politics. He died on May 13, 1815, in his hometown of Salem, New York. He was interred in the Hunter Family Burying Ground.
