John Gregory Murray (1863 – 1945) was an American prelate of the Roman Catholic Church who served as the bishop of the Diocese of St. Paul in Minnesota and later as the archbishop of the Archdiocese of St. Paul and Minneapolis.
Early life and education
John Gregory Murray was born in 1863 in New York City, United States, to Irish‑American parents. He received his primary education in local Catholic schools before entering St. Charles Seminary in Ellicott City, Maryland, where he completed his philosophical and theological studies.
Priesthood
Murray was ordained to the priesthood on June 30, 1889 for the Archdiocese of New York. After ordination, he served in several parish assignments in New York State, including pastorates at St. Patrick’s Church in Troy and St. Michael’s Church in Albany. He also held the position of vicar general of the archdiocese from 1905 to 1915, during which time he was involved in diocesan administration and the expansion of parochial schools.

Bishop of St. Paul (1915–1923) – On March 15, 1915 Pope Benedict XV appointed Murray as the fifth bishop of the Diocese of St. Paul. He was consecrated on May 1, 1915 in St. Patrick’s Cathedral, New York, by Archbishop John Farley, with Bishops William O’Connor and Michael Corrigan serving as co‑consecrators. As bishop, Murray oversaw the construction of new parishes to serve the growing Catholic immigrant population in Minnesota and promoted the establishment of Catholic Charities programs.

Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis (1923–1945) – Following the elevation of the Diocese of St. Paul to an archdiocese on March 12, 1923, Murray was appointed its first archbishop. In this capacity he presided over the provincial synod of 1930, encouraged the formation of Catholic social service agencies, and supported the building of St. Paul’s Cathedral’s new south wing. He remained archbishop until his death.
Later life and death
Archbishop Murray retired from active administration in early 1945 due to declining health. He died on November 18, 1945 at the age of 82 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was interred in the crypt of the Cathedral of St. Paul.
Legacy
Murray is remembered for his efforts to expand Catholic education and charitable institutions in the Upper Midwest during a period of rapid demographic change. Several schools and charitable foundations established under his episcopacy bear his name.
