John Englehart (born Joseph John Englehart; June 14, 1867 – April 14, 1915) was an American landscape painter known for his realist depictions of the American West, particularly California and the Pacific Northwest. He worked under numerous pseudonyms throughout his career.
Biography
Englehart was born on June 14, 1867, in Chicago, Illinois. He relocated to Northern California in the 1880s, where he began his career during the period of popularity for California landscape paintings. From the late 1880s until the turn of the century, he maintained a studio in San Francisco on Clay Street while residing across the bay in Oakland. He painted scenes of California, including various views of Yosemite Valley.
In the late 1890s, Englehart traveled to the Pacific Northwest, producing landscapes of the Tacoma, Washington area. In 1902, after San Francisco art patrons' tastes shifted toward European art, he opened a studio in Portland, Oregon, where he remained until approximately 1904. He participated in the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in 1905. In 1909, he was awarded a prize for a landscape painting in a New York exhibit.
By 1910, Englehart had returned to the San Francisco Bay Area, residing in Alameda near Oakland until his death on April 14, 1915.
Artistic Style
Englehart's style was Realism, characterized by an illustrative and descriptive approach. Unlike contemporaries such as Thomas Hill, who painted landscapes "not as it is, but as it ought to be," Englehart aimed to bring the viewer closer to an actual experience of "being there." He typically avoided the romantic light of sunrise and sunset, preferring midday light, and incorporated multiple viewpoints within his compositions.
His work did not receive the same level of critical acclaim as that of Hudson River School painters such as Albert Bierstadt and Thomas Moran. Nevertheless, he was commercially successful, and his works are held in several museum collections.
