John Dopyera (April 16, 1893 – October 13, 1982) was a Slovak‑American inventor and luthier best known for developing resonator string instruments, most notably the resonator guitar and the instrument marketed under the brand name “Dobro.”
Early life and immigration

- The Dobro brand was sold to Gibson Guitar Corporation in 1966; Gibson continued to use the “Dobro” name for resonator guitars and related instruments.
- Dopyera remained active in instrument design throughout his life, contributing to resonator mandolins, ukuleles, and steel guitars.
- He was inducted into the National Steel Guitar Hall of Fame (1993, posthumously) for his pioneering work.
