John Devine (footballer, born 1933)

John Devine (born 1933) was an Irish professional footballer who played as a left-back. He is most notable for his significant career with Blackburn Rovers, where he made over 300 appearances, and for playing in the 1960 FA Cup Final.

Early Career

Born in Dublin, Ireland, Devine began his professional career with St Patrick's Athletic in his home country. His performances there attracted attention from English clubs.

Blackburn Rovers

In 1953, Devine moved to England to join Blackburn Rovers. He quickly established himself as a reliable and consistent left-back for the club. Over a twelve-year period, Devine became a key figure in the Blackburn defence, making 303 Football League appearances and scoring 2 goals. His most notable achievement with the club was reaching the 1960 FA Cup Final, where Blackburn Rovers were defeated 3-0 by Wolverhampton Wanderers at Wembley Stadium.

Coventry City

In 1965, Devine transferred to Coventry City, then managed by Jimmy Hill. He continued to play a role in their defence, making 41 league appearances and scoring 1 goal during his two seasons with the club.

Later Career

After leaving Coventry City in 1967, Devine played for non-league clubs Great Harwood Town and Clitheroe before retiring from professional football.

International Representation

Devine represented Ireland at youth and amateur international levels, but did not earn a senior cap for the Republic of Ireland national team.
