John Depeden

John Depeden (died 1460) was an English clergyman who served as a Canon of Windsor from 1430 to 1460.

Career

Depeden held a series of ecclesiastical appointments during his lifetime:

  • Treasurer of St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle (1440)
  • Prebendary of Wisborough in Chichester (1441–1460)
  • Rector of Denham
  • Prebendary of Torleton in Salisbury (1443–1457)
  • Register of the Order of the Garter (1445)

He was appointed to the sixth stall in St George's Chapel, Windsor Castle in 1430 and held the canonry until his death in 1460.

Historical Context

St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle is the spiritual home of the Order of the Garter, one of the most prestigious orders of chivalry in England. As a canon and later treasurer of the chapel, Depeden would have been involved in the religious and administrative life of this important royal institution. His role as Register of the Order of the Garter further connected him to the ceremonial and administrative functions of the order.
