John Cleland (racing driver)

John Cleland (born 18 August 1952) is a Scottish former racing driver who is best known for his successful career in the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC).

Cleland began his motorsport career in the early 1980s, primarily competing in saloon car racing. He made his debut in the British Touring Car Championship in 1989, driving a Vauxhall Cavalier for the Vauxhall Sport team. He quickly established himself as a front-runner, known for his aggressive yet consistent driving style.

His most successful period came with Vauxhall, where he remained for his entire BTCC career until his retirement from the series in 1999. He became a two-time British Touring Car Champion, winning the title in 1995 and again in 1996, both times driving the Vauxhall Cavalier and later the Vauxhall Vectra. Cleland was a popular figure with fans due to his passionate driving and candid interviews.

Throughout his BTCC career, Cleland accumulated a total of 25 race wins, placing him among the most successful drivers in the championship's history. He was also a strong advocate for the championship and its continued success. After retiring from full-time BTCC competition, Cleland occasionally participated in historic racing events and other motorsport activities.
