John Ben Shepperd

John Ben Shepperd (October 19, 1915 – April 7, 1990) was an American attorney and politician who served as the Attorney General of Texas from 1953 to 1957. A prominent figure in the Texas Republican Party during the mid-20th century, Shepperd is remembered for his efforts to rebuild the party and for his dedication to public service and ethics.

Early Life and Education Born in Gladewater, Texas, Shepperd grew up in the East Texas oilfield region. He attended the University of Texas at Austin, where he earned both his undergraduate degree and a Juris Doctor from the University of Texas School of Law. After law school, he established a private practice in Odessa, Texas.

Political Career Shepperd began his political career by serving in various local and state Republican Party leadership roles, working to establish a stronger Republican presence in a state traditionally dominated by Democrats. In 1952, he was elected Attorney General of Texas, a position he held for one term. As Attorney General, he was known for his efforts to combat corruption and for advocating for stronger ethical standards in government.

In 1956, Shepperd ran for Governor of Texas but was defeated by Democrat Price Daniel. Following his gubernatorial campaign, he largely retired from electoral politics.

Post-Political Life and Legacy After leaving public office, Shepperd remained an influential civic leader. He was a prolific writer and speaker on topics of leadership, ethics, and the importance of civic engagement. One of his most enduring legacies is the John Ben Shepperd Public Leadership Institute at the University of Texas Permian Basin in Odessa. Founded in 1985, the institute is dedicated to educating future leaders and promoting an understanding of civic responsibility and public service, principles that Shepperd championed throughout his life.

Shepperd passed away on April 7, 1990, at the age of 74. His contributions to the Texas Republican Party and his emphasis on ethical leadership continue to be recognized.
