Johann Christian Kittel (13 May 1732 – 22 June 1809) was a German organist, composer, and pedagogue. He is chiefly known as one of the last pupils of Johann Sebastian Bach and for his contributions to the repertoire and teaching of the Baroque and early Classical organ tradition.
Early life and education
Born in Ohrdruf, Thuringia, Kittel entered the St. Thomas School in Leipzig, where he studied under Johann Sebastian Bach from 1750 until Bach’s death in 1750. He also received instruction from other local musicians, including organist Johann Gottfried Walther.
Career
After completing his studies, Kittel served as organist at several churches. In 1760 he was appointed organist at the Stadtkirche (Town Church) in Erfurt, a position he held for the remainder of his life. He was also a teacher of organ and composition, counting among his students the later organist and composer Johann Friedrich Fasch.
Compositions
Kittel’s output includes organ sonatas, chorale preludes, and pedagogical works. Notable publications are:
- Tonsetzungs- und Verzierungslehre (1769) – a treatise on phrasing and ornamentation for keyboard instruments.
- Der angehende Organist (1790) – a method for organists covering technique, registration, and improvisation.
- Several collections of organ sonatas and chorale settings that reflect a synthesis of late Baroque idioms and emerging Classical styles.
Influence and legacy
Kittel’s pedagogical writings were widely used in German-speaking regions during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, influencing the next generation of organists and composers. His works are occasionally performed and recorded today as examples of the transitional period between the Baroque and Classical eras in German organ music.
Death
Johann Christian Kittel died in Erfurt on 22 June 1809 at the age of 77. His manuscripts and publications remain in several German music libraries and are of interest to scholars studying the transmission of Bach’s organ tradition.
