Johan Neeskens (born 15 June 1951 in Heemskerk, Netherlands) is a Dutch former professional footballer and coach. Recognised for his versatility, stamina, and powerful long‑range shooting, he was a prominent midfielder and occasional defender during the 1970s and 1980s.
Club career
- Ajax (1970–1974): Made his professional debut and won three consecutive Eredivisie titles (1970‑71, 1971‑72, 1972‑73) and the European Cup in 1971 and 1973.
- FC Barcelona (1974–1979): Transferred for a then‑record fee; contributed to two La Liga championships (1973‑74, 1974‑75) and a Copa del Rey (1977‑78).
- New York Cosmos (1979–1984): Played in the North American Soccer League, winning three league championships (1978, 1980, 1982).
- FC Groningen (1984–1986): Returned to the Netherlands, serving as player‑coach before retiring from playing.
International career
- Earned 67 caps for the Netherlands national team, scoring 17 goals.
- Participated in the 1974 and 1978 FIFA World Cups, with the Dutch side finishing as runners‑up on both occasions.
- Played in the UEFA European Championship 1976, where the Netherlands reached the semifinals.
