Joe Cobb

Joe Cobb (November 7, 1916 – May 21, 2002) was an American child actor, best known for his appearances in the Our Gang comedy series (also known as The Little Rascals) during the silent film era. He was one of the original and most recognizable members of the popular Hal Roach-produced short films.

Early Life and Career Born in Altus, Oklahoma, Cobb began his acting career at a young age. He joined the Our Gang troupe in 1922, appearing in the very first Our Gang pilot film, Our Gang, and remained with the series throughout its silent period.

Our Gang Films Cobb quickly became a prominent figure in the Our Gang ensemble. He was easily recognizable by his portly build and round face, often wearing a distinctive flat cap. He typically portrayed a good-natured, loyal, and sometimes mischievous character, frequently serving as a sidekick or a core member of the group alongside other early Rascals such as Mickey Daniels, Jackie Condon, and Allen "Farina" Hoskins. His screen presence was characterized by a naturalistic charm and comedic timing.

He appeared in 31 Our Gang films between 1922 and 1929, including notable shorts like Lodge Night (1923), Thundering Fleas (1926), The Glorious Fourth (1927), and The Old Wallop (1927). As the series transitioned to sound films in the late 1920s, Cobb, like several other original members, was gradually phased out. His age made it difficult to continue playing a young child, and the need for new actors who could adapt to the advent of sound technology led to cast changes. His last official Our Gang appearance was in Boxing Gloves (1929). He later made a brief, uncredited appearance in the musical short Reunion in Rhythm (1937), which featured several former Our Gang members.

Later Life After leaving Our Gang, Cobb largely retired from acting. He subsequently worked for many years in the aircraft industry in California. Despite leaving Hollywood, he maintained a connection to his Our Gang past, occasionally participating in reunions, interviews, and events that celebrated the legacy of the beloved comedy series.

Joe Cobb passed away on May 21, 2002, in Santa Ana, California, at the age of 85. He was one of the last surviving members of the original silent Our Gang cast, and his contributions helped define the early years of the iconic comedy franchise.
