Jocelyne Béroard

Jocelyne Béroard (born 3 August 1954) is a French singer, songwriter, and actress from Martinique. She is best known as a lead vocalist of the Caribbean music group Kassav', which pioneered the zouk genre in the late 20th century.

Early life and education
Béroard was born in Fort-de-France, Martinique. She began studying music at a young age, taking piano lessons and participating in local choirs. Details about her formal education beyond music studies are not widely documented.

Career

1970s–1980s
In 1979, Béroard co‑founded Kassàv' with Pierre-Édouard Decimus, Jacob Desvarieux, and other musicians. The group blended traditional Caribbean rhythms with modern instrumentation, creating a sound that became known as zouk. Béroard contributed vocals, songwriting, and occasional keyboard work. The band's early albums, such as Love & Kaïla (1980) and Kassav' (1984), achieved commercial success throughout the French Antilles and French‑speaking Europe.

Solo work
Béroard released her first solo album, Siwo, in 1995. The record featured a mix of zouk, pop, and R&B influences, and produced the hit single “Laisse‑Moi Danser,” which topped the French SNEP chart in 1995. Subsequent solo projects include Bérbère (1999) and Nouveau Monde (2001). Her solo repertoire is noted for lyrical themes of love, identity, and Caribbean cultural heritage.

Acting
In addition to music, Béroard pursued acting. She appeared in the 1995 French film Maman, j’ai raté l’avion (the French title of Home Alone), providing a cameo performance. She also performed in stage productions in Martinique and France, though comprehensive listings of her theatrical roles are limited.

Influence and legacy
Béroard is widely regarded as one of the most prominent female voices in Caribbean popular music. Her work with Kassav' helped popularize zouk internationally, influencing subsequent artists in the French Caribbean diaspora and beyond. Critics have noted her vocal style for its clear timbre and emotive delivery.

Personal life
Béroard maintains a private personal life. She is known to reside in Paris and Martinique, dividing her time between recording, touring, and occasional philanthropic activities, particularly those supporting music education in the Caribbean.
