Jinyun County

Definition
Jinyun County (金浚县) is an administrative division of the People's Republic of China, located in the central part of Zhejiang province. It is subordinate to the prefecture‑level city of Lishui.

Overview
Jinyun County covers an area of approximately 2,100 km² and, according to the most recent national census data available (2020), has a population of around 340,000 residents. The county is situated in a mountainous region of western Zhejiang, characterized by a humid subtropical climate with distinct seasonal variations. Its economy is diversified, encompassing agriculture (notably tea, bamboo, and fruit production), forestry, mineral extraction (including coal and zinc), and a growing manufacturing sector that produces machinery, textiles, and electronic components. The county also benefits from tourism, attracted by natural scenery such as Jinyun Mountain (金浚山) and historic sites.

Etymology/Origin
The name “Jinyun” (金浚) combines the characters “金” (jīn, meaning “gold”) and “浚” (jùn, historically meaning “to dredge” or “deep water”). The designation is thought to derive from the region’s historic abundance of mineral resources, particularly precious metals, and its network of rivers and streams that have been important for irrigation and transport. Precise historical documentation of the name’s origin is limited, but the etymology aligns with common naming practices in Chinese geography.
