Jinshi (Chinese: 金石镇; pinyin: Jīnshí Zhèn) is a town and the administrative seat of Xinning County in the Shaoyang prefecture‑level city of Hunan Province, People’s Republic of China.
Geography
Jinshi is situated in the southwestern part of Xinning County. Its coordinates are 26°25′57″N 110°50′49″E. The town borders Langshan Town to the south, Huanglong Town and Quanzhou County of Guangxi to the east, Gaoqiao Town and Wantang Township to the north, and Shuimiao Town to the west. The area of Jinshi covers approximately 422.67 km² (163.19 sq mi).
History and Administrative Changes
On 2 December 2015, Jinshi was created through the amalgamation of three former township‑level divisions: Feixianqiao Township (飞仙桥乡), Baisha Town (白沙镇), and the former Jinshi Town. This reorganization was part of a broader adjustment of township‑level administrative divisions approved by the Hunan Provincial Department of Civil Affairs.
In 2016, further consolidation of village‑level divisions reduced the number of subordinate units from 85 to 55. As of 2018, the town administers seven residential communities, 48 villages, and six other areas that include parks, farms, forest lands, and a research institute.
Demographics
According to the 2015 statistical data, Jinshi had a population of approximately 160,300 residents.
Governance
The town’s governmental seat is located in Liujiajing Community (刘家井社区). Jinshi functions as the county seat, hosting the primary administrative offices of Xinning County.
