Jim Shawler

James "Jim" Shawler (October 9, 1943 – May 29, 2021) was an American professional football linebacker. He played college football for the University of Tennessee and went on to play professionally in the American Football League (AFL) and National Football League (NFL) for the Denver Broncos and Atlanta Falcons.

Early Life and College Career

Shawler was born on October 9, 1943, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. He attended Notre Dame High School in Chattanooga, where he was a multi-sport athlete. After high school, he enrolled at the University of Tennessee, where he played as a linebacker for the Volunteers football team. During his time at Tennessee, he was a key defensive player and notably played alongside future Heisman Trophy winner and head coach Steve Spurrier.

Professional Career

Shawler was selected by the Buffalo Bills in the 10th round (80th overall) of the 1965 NFL Draft. However, he began his professional career in the American Football League (AFL), playing for the Denver Broncos in 1965.

In 1966, Shawler joined the Atlanta Falcons as a member of their inaugural team in the National Football League (NFL). He played one season with the Falcons, contributing to the franchise's first year of existence. He concluded his professional career after the 1966 season.

Death

Jim Shawler passed away on May 29, 2021, at the age of 77.
