Jim Dyck

James Henry "Jim" Dyck (February 12, 1930 – January 12, 1970) was an American professional baseball player. An outfielder and third baseman, he played in Major League Baseball (MLB) for the Cleveland Indians (1956–1958) and the Baltimore Orioles (1959).

Early Life and Amateur Career

Born in Omaha, Nebraska, Dyck attended Omaha South High School. He then pursued higher education and played college baseball at Iowa State University, where his athletic prowess caught the attention of professional scouts.

Professional Career

Dyck began his professional baseball journey within the Cleveland Indians' minor league system. He spent several seasons honing his skills, primarily as an outfielder, before earning a call-up to the major leagues.

He made his MLB debut with the Cleveland Indians on September 2, 1956. During his three seasons with the Indians, Dyck was primarily utilized as a reserve outfielder and an occasional third baseman. His most active season came in 1957, when he played in 90 games, posting a batting average of .223 with 6 home runs and 24 runs batted in (RBIs).

In 1959, Dyck was traded to the Baltimore Orioles. He appeared in 15 games for the Orioles, mostly in pinch-hitting situations or as a late-inning defensive replacement, before concluding his major league career. His final MLB appearance was on May 24, 1959.

Over his four-year MLB career, Jim Dyck played in a total of 154 games, achieving a career batting average of .207 with 9 home runs and 38 RBIs. After his time in the major leagues, he continued to play in the minor leagues for a few more seasons before retiring from professional baseball.

Personal Life and Death

Jim Dyck passed away prematurely at the age of 39 on January 12, 1970, in his hometown of Omaha, Nebraska. His death was attributed to a heart attack.
