Jianhe County

Jianhe County (simplified Chinese: 简河县; traditional Chinese: 簡河縣; pinyin: Jiǎnhé Xiàn) is a county‑level administrative division of the People’s Republic of China, located in the southeastern part of Guizhou Province. It is administered by the Qiandongnan Miao and Dong Autonomous Prefecture.

Geography
Jianhe County occupies an area of approximately 2,500 km² (≈ 965 sq mi) in a mountainous region of Guizhou. The county is bordered to the east by Hunan Province, to the north by Tongren City, and to the south and west by other counties within Qiandongnan Prefecture. The terrain is characterized by karst formations, forested hills, and river valleys, the principal watercourse being the Jian River, from which the county derives its name.

Administrative divisions
The county is subdivided into a number of towns and townships. As of the most recent administrative adjustment, there are 8 towns (镇) and 9 ethnic townships (民族乡), the latter established to provide self‑governance for the local Miao, Dong, and other minority populations.

Demographics
According to the 2020 national census, Jianhe County had a resident population of roughly 300,000 people. Ethnic minorities constitute the majority, with the Miao and Dong peoples together accounting for over 80 % of the population; Han Chinese and other groups make up the remainder. The official languages are Standard Mandarin and the local dialects of Miao and Dong, which are used in daily communication and cultural activities.

History
The area that now forms Jianhe County has been inhabited since antiquity by various ethnic groups, particularly the Miao and Dong. It was organized as a county‑level jurisdiction in the early 20th century, during the period of Republican China, although exact dates differ among historical records. Since the establishment of the People’s Republic of China in 1949, Jianhe has been incorporated into the Qiandongnan Autonomous Prefecture, which was created to recognize the region’s ethnic composition.

Economy
Jianhe County’s economy is primarily based on agriculture, forestry, and the exploitation of mineral resources. Major agricultural products include rice, corn, sweet potatoes, and a variety of cash crops such as tea and tobacco. The county also possesses deposits of coal, limestone, and non‑ferrous metals, which contribute to local industrial output. In recent years, tourism has been promoted, emphasizing the county’s ethnic cultural heritage, traditional festivals, and natural scenery.

Transportation
The county is served by a network of provincial highways that link it to the prefectural capital, Kaili, and to neighboring provinces. A railway station on the Shanghai–Kunming railway line (Jianhe Railway Station) provides passenger and freight services, facilitating regional connectivity. Plans for additional high‑speed rail and road infrastructure have been included in provincial development initiatives.

Education and culture
Jianhe County maintains a system of primary and secondary schools, as well as vocational training centers that focus on agricultural and technical skills. Cultural institutions preserve and promote Miao and Dong traditions, including music, dance, embroidery, and the annual “Lusheng” festival, which draws participants from across the autonomous prefecture.
