Anti-Communist Opposition and Early Government Roles
During the 1980s, Kropiwnicki was an active participant in the Solidarity movement, the independent trade union that played a crucial role in the fall of communism in Poland. His commitment to democratic change led to his involvement in the nascent democratic political structures following the collapse of the communist regime in 1989.
Following Poland's transition to democracy, Kropiwnicki entered national politics. He served as the Minister of Labour and Social Policy in the government of Prime Minister Jan Olszewski from 1991 to 1992. During the same period, he also held the position of Minister of Ownership Transformation, overseeing the privatization process of state-owned enterprises.
Member of Sejm
Kropiwnicki was elected as a Member of the Sejm for several terms. He served in the I, II, III, and IV terms of the Sejm, continuously from 1991 to 2005. Throughout his parliamentary career, he was associated with various political parties of the center-right and conservative spectrum, including the Center Agreement (Porozumienie Centrum), Christian National Union (Zjednoczenie Chrześcijańsko-Narodowe), Movement for Reconstruction of Poland (Ruch Odbudowy Polski), and Law and Justice (Prawo i Sprawiedliwość). He was known for his conservative economic views and his advocacy for traditional values.
Mayor of Łódź
In 2002, Jerzy Kropiwnicki successfully ran for the office of Mayor of Łódź, Poland's third-largest city. He served two terms as mayor, from 2002 to 2010. His tenure as mayor was focused on urban development, revitalization projects, and attracting investment to the city. He faced significant challenges during his time in office, including managing the city's budget and addressing urban decay.
Post-Mayoral Career
