Jerry Schumacher

Jerry Schumacher (born August 6, 1970) is an American track‑and‑field and cross‑country coach. He has held prominent coaching positions at several collegiate and professional organizations and, since July 2022, serves as the head coach of both the University of Oregon’s men’s and women’s track‑and‑field and cross‑country programs.

Early life and education
Schumacher was born on August 6, 1970. He attended the University of Wisconsin–Madison, where he competed in middle‑distance running, specializing in the 1500 metres and recording a personal best of 3:39.46 in 1993.

Coaching career

University of North Carolina (1997) – Schumacher began his coaching career as an assistant coach at the University of North Carolina.

University of Wisconsin–Madison (1998‑2008) – At age 28 he accepted a full‑time position at his alma mater. During his tenure, Wisconsin won two NCAA team titles in distance running under his direction.

Nike Oregon Project (2008‑2014) – In June 2008 Schumacher joined the Nike‑sponsored Oregon Project, working alongside elite distance runners and contributing to the program’s development.

Bowerman Track Club (2014‑2022) – He became head coach of the Bowerman Track Club, a professional training group based in Eugene, Oregon. While leading the club he coached numerous Olympians and world‑championship athletes, including Mohammed Ahmed, Grant Fisher, Evan Jager, and Elise Cranny.

University of Oregon (2022‑present) – In July 2022 Schumacher was appointed head coach for both cross country and track‑and‑field at the University of Oregon. He retained his role with the Bowerman Track Club, overseeing collegiate and professional athletes concurrently. His contract with Oregon reportedly spans seven years and is valued at approximately $3.4 million.
