Jens Jørgen Thorsen (13 August 1932 – 26 July 2000) was a Danish visual artist, primarily known for his work as a painter and sculptor. He was born and died in Copenhagen, Denmark. Thorsen studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts from 1951 to 1956, where he received formal training in both painting and sculpture.
After completing his education, Thorsen became associated with the Danish avant‑garde art scene of the 1960s. His artistic practice was characterised by the use of industrial materials—such as steel, concrete, and glass—in large‑scale, abstract sculptural forms. He produced a number of public installations that were installed in Danish cities, contributing to the development of modernist public art in Denmark.
Thorsen also worked as an educator, returning to the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts to teach sculpture and drawing during the 1970s and 1980s. His work was featured in several national and international group exhibitions, including participation in the 1970 Venice Biennale.
Although not widely known outside of Denmark, Thorsen is regarded within Danish art history as a significant figure in post‑war modernism, particularly for his integration of architectural concepts into sculpture and his influence on subsequent generations of Danish sculptors.
