Jehiel Cochran House (also known locally as Brickhaven) is a historic house located at 65 Burnham Road in Andover, Massachusetts. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP reference No. 82004827) and was added to the register on June 10, 1982. Massachusetts cultural inventory records list the address at 63 Burnham Road, while the Andover Historical Society records it at 65 Burnham Road.
Description
The house is a rectangular brick structure, 2½ stories high, with a side gable roof and twin interior chimneys. A large modern addition has been built to the right of the original structure that rivals it in size. The windows are six-over-six sash with granite lintels, and the center entry is flanked by sidelight windows. The property also includes a small vintage barn. The architectural style is a vernacular Greek Revival with transitional Federal influences.
History
The house was built in the 1830s (circa 1838) by Jehiel Cochran, an Andover native who owned a nearby brickyard. Cochran purchased the property from Thomas C. Foster on December 18, 1838, for $700. He is listed as a brick maker in the deed. The house is locally distinctive for its use of brick, a material uncommon for residential construction in the Andover area during that period, where most houses were built of wood. Jehiel Cochran was born on October 29, 1810, in Andover, the son of Samuel and Mary "Polly" (Bailey) Cochran. He was apparently associated with the brickyard for some time but was listed as a farmer at the time of his death in 1860.
Significance
The Jehiel Cochran House is significant for three reasons: (1) as the home of a brickmaker associated with an early civic industry; (2) for its use of a locally uncommon building material, brick; and (3) as a good example of the vernacular Greek Revival style in Andover, and one of the few remaining period houses in the vicinity of Shawsheen Village. It is part of the Town of Andover Multiple Resource Area (MRA).
