Jeannette Aster (born 1934) is an Austrian‑born Canadian opera director, pedagogue, and arts administrator. She is noted for her contributions to opera production and education in Canada, particularly through her long‑term association with the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.
Early life and education
Aster was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1934. She pursued formal musical training at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna, where she studied voice and stage direction.
Career
After relocating to Canada, Aster became a central figure in the development of operatic training and performance. In the 1970s, she joined the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, where she founded the Banff Centre Opera Studio (later known as the Banff Centre Opera School). As artistic director of the studio, she designed intensive training programs for emerging singers, directors, and production staff, emphasizing an integrated approach to operatic performance.
Aster directed a wide repertoire of operas for the Banff Centre productions as well as for regional and national companies, including the Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, and Calgary Opera. Her productions were noted for innovative staging and a strong emphasis on collaboration between singers and technical teams.
Teaching and mentorship
Beyond directing, Aster has been influential as an educator, conducting masterclasses, workshops, and seminars across Canada and internationally. Her mentorship has contributed to the careers of numerous prominent opera singers and directors.
