Definition
Jeanne Little (10 May 1938 – 7 November 2020) was an Australian singer, actress, and television personality, best known for her flamboyant stage costumes, distinctive catchphrase, and regular appearances on Australian variety shows during the 1970s and 1980s.
Overview
Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Jeanne Little began her career as a nightclub performer before gaining national prominence as a regular guest on The Graham Kennedy Show in the early 1970s. Her exuberant persona—characterised by glittering gowns, outlandish headdresses, and the repeated exclamation “Oh! I love you”—made her a household name. Little subsequently hosted her own television series, The Jeanne Little Show (1974–1975), and appeared in numerous other variety and talk programmes, including Hey Hey It's Saturday, The Mike Walsh Show, and Good Morning Australia.
In addition to television work, Little recorded several albums of popular and novelty songs, performed extensively in cabaret circuits, and toured both domestically and internationally. She was recognised for her contributions to the performing arts with the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 2004. Little retired from regular public performance in the early 2000s and passed away in 2020 at the age of 82.
Etymology/Origin
“Jeanne” is a French-derived feminine given name, a variant of “Jean” and “Johanna,” meaning “God is gracious.” “Little” is an English surname that historically described a person of small stature or relative youth; in this case it functioned as the performer’s family name rather than a stage name.
