Early Life
Jeanne-Marie Lanvin was born into a modest family in Paris. She received a basic education and, after the death of her husband, a cloth merchant named Alexandre Lanvin, she relocated to London in 1905 to support her son, Maurice, who was ill with tuberculosis.
Entry into Fashion
While in London, Lanvin began designing and making hats and clothing for herself and her son. Her designs attracted the attention of society women, leading to commissions for custom garments. In 1911 she returned to Paris and opened a small workshop on rue du Faubourg Saint-Honoré, which later expanded into a full‑service couture house.
Expansion of the House of Lanvin
- 1919: Lanvin introduced her first perfume, Arpège, named after the musical term “arpeggio”. The fragrance became a commercial success and helped finance the expansion of the fashion house.
- 1920s–1930s: The house grew to include ready‑to‑wear lines, accessories, and a menswear division. Lanvin’s designs were noted for their delicate embroidery, use of fine fabrics, and a feminine aesthetic that contrasted with the more austere styles of some contemporaries.
- 1936: Jeanne Lanvin retired from active design work, passing creative leadership to a team of designers while retaining ownership and oversight of the business.
Legacy
Jeanne Lanvin is recognized as one of the pioneering figures in early 20th‑century haute couture. Her establishment of a diversified fashion house that incorporated perfume, ready‑to‑wear, and accessories set a precedent for modern luxury brands. The Lanvin label continues to operate globally, maintaining the founder’s emphasis on elegance and craftsmanship.
